Height and width affect both storage capacity and room proportions. Tall bookcases (1800-2100mm) maximise storage but require a room with adequate ceiling clearance and can feel imposing in a smaller room. Wide, lower bookcases (900-1200mm wide, 900-1200mm tall) work as lower room elements and double as display surfaces on top. A combination of tall and short units in the same room — particularly when fitted from floor to ceiling along one wall — creates a classic library feel.

Structural stability becomes more important as bookshelves get taller and heavier. Books are dense and heavy; a full bookcase can weigh 50-100kg depending on size. Ensure wall-fixing (anti-tip brackets into studs) for any bookcase over 1.5m tall, and check that the shelf material won't bow under the weight of dense book rows — solid timber and thick MDF with internal bracing hold up better than thin laminate shelves.

Open-back bookcases are more versatile — they can be positioned room-divider style or against a coloured wall to create a visual backdrop. Closed-back bookcases provide a finished look from the front and are better suited to wall placement.
