Grow lights are the most significant component investment for indoor hydroponic growing. Full-spectrum LED grow lights have replaced fluorescent and HID systems as the standard for home growers — they produce less heat, use significantly less electricity and provide a more complete light spectrum. The intensity and coverage area of a grow light determines what and how much you can grow. For herbs and leafy greens, lower-intensity LEDs are sufficient; fruiting plants like tomatoes and capsicum require more intense lighting.

Nutrient solutions provide all the minerals and trace elements that plants normally extract from soil. Two-part or three-part nutrient systems allow adjustment of the nutrient mix for different growth stages (seedling, vegetative, flowering). pH management of the nutrient solution is essential — most plants prefer a pH of 5.5-6.5 in hydroponic systems.
