Pots and planters are among the most flexible tools in any garden — they bring plants to balconies and patios that couldn't otherwise support them, allow seasonal colour to be changed with the plants, and let you grow exactly what you want exactly where you want it. Our range covers ceramic, terracotta, fibreglass, concrete and metal designs in sizes from desktop to statement floor planters.
The right pot or planter is as much about the plant's needs as the visual aesthetic of the space. A beautiful pot in the wrong material or with inadequate drainage will kill the plant inside it, regardless of how carefully it's watered.
Drainage is the most critical functional requirement. All pots used outdoors in Australian summer rainfall conditions need drainage holes to prevent waterlogging. Most of our indoor planters also include drainage holes and come with saucers to protect surfaces. For containers without holes intended for purely decorative use, plants can be grown in a separate plastic pot and placed inside the decorative container — known as a 'pot inside a pot' setup.
Material affects both aesthetics and practical performance. Terracotta is porous, allowing air and moisture exchange through the pot walls — beneficial for plants susceptible to root rot but means the pot dries out faster in hot Australian summers. This makes terracotta better suited to drought-tolerant plants than thirsty ones. Glazed ceramic pots retain moisture longer and come in the widest range of colours and finishes. Fibreglass looks like concrete or terracotta but is dramatically lighter — important for large balcony planters where weight loading is a concern. Concrete and stone planters are heavy but extremely durable and suit Australian outdoor conditions well.
Size selection should give the plant adequate root space. Most people start with a pot too small — a container that restricts root growth limits the plant above it. For a larger shrub or mature plant, a 40-50cm diameter pot is the practical minimum. For statement trees in pots (fiddle-leaf figs, citrus, olive trees), a 60-80cm diameter is appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size pot do I need for a fiddle leaf fig or large indoor plant in Australia?
For a mature fiddle leaf fig (1.2-1.5m tall), a pot with a minimum diameter of 40cm and depth of 35-40cm is appropriate. Repot when you see roots circling the base or emerging from drainage holes. A pot 5-7cm larger in diameter than the existing pot is the right size increase.
Are fibreglass planters suitable for outdoor use in Australian conditions?
Yes — quality fibreglass planters are UV-stabilised and handle Australian outdoor conditions well. They're significantly lighter than concrete or stone planters with similar aesthetics, making them the practical choice for balconies, rooftops and anywhere weight loading is a concern.
How do I prevent pots from overheating plant roots in Australian summer?
Dark-coloured pots in direct sun can reach temperatures that damage root systems. Choose light-coloured or glazed pots for direct sun positions, double-pot (place the growing pot inside a larger decorative pot to create an insulating air gap), or position pots so the container is shaded even if the plant receives sun.
